Once it was decided to progress, the course leader based at Perth had to manage and develop a team that was not necessarily of his choosing. The vast majority of UHI staff are appointed to a partner institution that then deploys them on UHI programs with the agreement of the UHI faculty leader and the relevant course leader. In this case there were no problems with the staff selected by the partners. The UHI has a vigorous program-reporting mechanism as part of its qualityassurance procedures. This means that course-team reports must be made on a regular basis – course-team meetings are a requirement of this process.
A person with a red face, gesticulating wildly, is obviously annoyed. But there are more subtle clues that a knowledge of body language can provide, so as to ascertain the true feelings being expressed by a communicator. A person may be saying one thing but their likely behavior will be signaled by their body language. These automatic body responses, which are hard to control unless a person is aware of body language, can be called intrinsic body language clues as they involve the body itself. Extrinsic body language clues involving clothing and so on are considered later in this chapter.
TELL THEM, TELL THEM, TELL THEM It is said that those entering the church as a profession are given a particular piece of advice for the delivery of effective sermons: tell them what you are going to tell them, tell it to them, and then tell them what you have told them.
