Today’s globalized communications change these assumptions. The combined force of contemporary mass media, the culture industries, information technology, and personal communications technology spreads ideologies that range from strict religious authoritarianism to liberal democratic secularism all over the globe. Geopolitical relations and cultural assumptions are in flux everywhere. Religious and ethnic terrorism – one kind of globalization “from below” – is plainly visible yet, as I hope to show in this book, globalization can also spread peace and stability by eliminating “disconnectedness” (Barnett 2005).

Global emissaries of the world’s major monotheistic religions – especially those promoting various strains of Christianity and Islam – have tried throughout history to unify the world in the name of the gods 6 James Lull they claim to represent. Contact between persons of different metaphysical philosophies and religious faiths has led to many recruitments and conversions. It has also led to endless disagreements, disputes, wars, and conquests. Because of its unique and powerful emotional significance to many individuals and groups, religion remains the chief criterion for cultural inclusion and exclusion – particularly in the developing world where people who suffer economic deprivation and despair look for signs of hope and justice.

Instead, the 32 James Lull young men carry on with energy and style through “the sheer life, intelligence, and wit of their cultural practices” (Willis 2000: xx). The creative, everyday cultural practices of the lads and of British youth in general comprise the focus of Willis’ later work – Common Culture (1990) and The Ethnographic Imagination (2000).
