Each loses its distinctiveness and a unique product results, a process called the melting pot. These concepts have their origin partially in scientific theory, partially in utopian wish, and partially in political ideology. Melting Pot In 1908, Israel Zangwill, himself an immigrant, wrote a play popular at the time but which is now forgotten except for its title, The Melting Pot. According to Zangwill's vision, the United States was a great crucible. In it, cultural and genetic blending inevitably took place to produce a product unique among the peoples of the earth.

The immigration door, once so wide opened that everyone could walk through, was now shut to all but a select few with the "right" racial background. Even though the 1924 law quelled many political issues, a large extant ethnicity remained, and it required scientific explanation.
