4 IMPLICATIONS OF RELIGIOUS IDENTITY IN FRAMING RESEARCH RELATIONSHIPS In Chicago, a research team working in the Mexican community included a researcher who was a student at a local high-status university and, at the same time, an ordained priest. He was an excellent field researcher and was able to collect many high-quality in-depth interviews. In the process, he wore his collar and respondents knew that he was a priest. When he left the priesthood to marry, he found that although his prior status had provided him with ready access to people, it had not required him to develop the interpersonal skills needed to obtain data from community members without that initial authoritative status.

He had to establish fresh relationships and build trust from the ground up with merchants on the main avenues and with young vendors and buyers. He did not readily fit into the stereotyped representations of Puerto Rican young men on the street, and people were not forthcoming when he introduced himself as a researcher studying the economy of the avenues. After several weeks of limited success, one merchant who was more open than the others mentioned that people thought he was a “narc” (a “narc” is defined as a law enforcement officer or a person who may not be a member of law enforcement but turns people into the police for drug dealing).

On the other hand, if ethnographers come from a particular sector of the study population, likeness may lead residents to question researchers’ abilities to maintain confidentiality in the research site. Trust may be reduced rather than enhanced if the researcher is perceived to be from an ethnic, class, or educational group believed to have a known negative bias toward the study population. For example, Latino researchers with PhDs may come from an urban, middle-class background and may be working in a rural poor community.
