In retrospect, it seems clear that what attracted me to Mead was that he gave me what I needed in that period — a body of ideas that challenged and empowered me to move from a life of contemplation to a life of action. It was time for me to return to the concrete for inspiration. Since 1931 I had been living a sheltered existence in the ivory towers of Barnard and Bryn Mawr. I had no idea where I would go or what I would do once I left the university. But my love affair with Hegel had given me a sense of how protracted the struggle would be.
