Attack! Like Jim Bowie, Travis did not blow up the Alamo. The fort had become an important symbol of Texan independence. Travis kept sending out pleas for help. But only a small number of men answered his call. There were fewer than two hundred men ready to defend the Alamo. A huge number of Mexican soldiers, probably between 2,000 and 4,000, were under Santa Anna’s command. These soldiers were ready to attack the fort on March 5, 1836.
