Every action by the James–Younger gang has gathered legends around it, and the Northfield raid is no exception. Since we’ve tried to assemble the most accurate narrative here, most such stories have been omitted, from the numerous “Jesse sightings” in the days leading up to the raid to a story of the gang’s elaborately equipped secret cave hideaway in Minnesota. One tale, however, is worth telling, because it’s the kind of story that enriches the folklore of the Wild West and maybe, just maybe, it’s true.
