Existing ones will grow in enrollment and levels of degrees offered; almost all have plans to offer a four-year degree. Also, more tribal colleges will be created. However, failure of the federal government to fund tribal colleges to the extent promised in the 1978 legislation hurts these institutions. Predominantly Hispanic and Hispanic-serving institutions will also grow in number and size as the Hispanic population increases in America. The number of 18-to-24-year-old Hispanics is projected to increase to approximately 20 percent of the American population by 2020, as compared to 13 percent in 1995 (Justiz, Wilson, & Björk, 1994).

One study by Jaski (1976), for example, looked at student-environment interaction at Felician College between 1968 and 1974. During that time period the student population at Felician changed from a majority of religious novices to a majority of lay students interested in secular careers. Another study surveyed students and parents at Garland Junior College to determine their educational expectations and found that job skills were ranked as the most important expectation (Garland, 1974). A third Two-Year Women’s Colleges 51 study examined critical issues pertaining to women’s education at Midway College in Kentucky, determining that women needed marketable skills, critical thinking, and a realistic positive self-image.

The Southwest and Rocky Mountains region includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. The Far West region includes Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. The names of the colleges in this list are the names used in Peterson’s Guide to Two-Year Colleges 1998 (1997). Two of the colleges have since changed their names as indicated in Chapter 4, Tribal Colleges. The 14 historically black colleges still in existence in Fall 1998 do not include Shorter College, since it lost its accreditation in Spring 1998.
