As the younger heads of household, husband and wife had complementary and at  War, Judgment, and Memory times overlapping spheres of influence (Grosclaude : ; Nussy SaintSaëns : –; Ott b: –). When any member of the household illegitimately retained or obtained jural power and authority, the house became “disordered” by conflict and the spiritual essence of the house was thought to be violated. Such violation occurred in three main circumstances: when the siblings of the designated inheritor refused to relinquish their claims to the property; when the elder couple refused to retire and relinquish ownership of the property to their successor; and when someone other than the inheritor (usually a disgruntled sibling) gained legal ownership of a room inside the house with the aid of the elder couple before they turned the rest of the property over to their chosen successor.

A substantial number of Spanish and southern Basque neighbors settled in Xiberoa during the first decades of the twentieth century, and the process by means of which they tried to become insiders forms an important part of Xiberoan contemporary history, especially in relation to the Resistance. The notion of the moral community developed in this book draws primarily upon departmental archives, fieldwork, and studies of some sixteenthcentury Basque customs and norms that still had relevance in the s (Bidart ; Desplats ; Heiberg ; Lauburu ).

Parents did not, however, necessarily follow the tradition of primogeniture. When demographic circumstances permitted, parents gave more emphasis to moral, physical, and social qualities than to age or gender in selecting their successor. Parents assessed the suitability of their children for that role at an early age, seeking the qualities of respect, honesty, fidelity, a willingness and ability to work hard for long periods, a strong emotional attachment to the natal house and community, and an ability to get along well with other people and to exercise good judgment.
