Tom and Frank McLaury took cover behind a horse. Then the Earps heard a gunshot behind them. The shooter was probably one of three men who had come on the scene: Johnny Behan, Ike Clanton, or another Cowboy, Will Allen. Some sources speculate that this sound came not from a gun but from a ricocheting bullet striking metal. In any case, the shot drew the Earp party’s attention momentarily. Morgan turned to fire behind him. Either Tom or Frank McLaury used the distraction to fire over the back of the horse they were hiding behind.
